BANK COTTAGE at HOLLYBUSH History |
The oldest document related to the cottage is 1836, a lease to William Baldwin for 21 years from Midsummer 1835, at 1s.6d per annum (7.5p)
This lease was assigned to Thomas Andrews, then Ellen Andrews and finally to Thomas Bunn, who then purchased the cottage from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in 1879. |
Mr & Mrs Sutherland became the owners and developed it from the simple cottage above to the much larger house of today. By 1984 it looked like this - |
The present owners, who bought it in 2002, have redecorated throughout, and are gradually changing the grounds to create more garden. In October 2003 it looked like this - |
During 2004 we created a new garden at the front, by removing 90 feet of Leylandii hedge, building a retaining wall, and moving in over 50 tons of soil. |
In 1991 the garage was converted to an office and a second lounge was added at the back. In 1994 a new garage was added to the right of the old converted one. By 2001 this was the view of the property from the Common - |
In 1898 it was sold to Mary Clutterbuck, then inherited by her son, James in 1914 who gave it to his wife.
In 1918 the cottage was bought by Samuel Havard, and then transferred to E M Onions (1920), Leonard Bunn (1921), Walter Bunn (1930), W J Andrews (1944), and finally Hereward Weaver (1950), who gave it to his wife, Mary in 1971.
She sold it, with planning permission to develop, in 1983. |
Over winter 2005-6 the stables were demolished and replaced by a fine wooden chalet style building which provides useful summer accommodation.
In 2007 we are creating a new garden in front of this, a huge project requring professional assistance.
Future plans include upgrading the swimming pool building and landscaping the rear to make a terraced area and circular walk - enough work for a few years anyway! |
